What causes damp in Wakefield's housing
Wakefield's housing is more mixed than most of the towns we cover: brick terraces close to the city centre, terraces built for mining families in the villages around it, and large interwar estates. Each tends to go damp for a different reason, which is why the survey comes before any price.

- Former colliery terraces Terraces in Outwood, Stanley and the old pit villages have often been rendered, repointed in cement or had their yards concreted since they were built. Any of those can bridge the damp proof course, so the wall is damp without the course itself having failed.
- Interwar estates Houses from the 1920s and 30s, such as those in Lupset, usually have early cavity walls. Damp here is more often condensation, or debris in the cavity carrying moisture across, than rising damp. Condensation control.
